In the latest edition of Entertainment Weekly, there is an article listing the season viewership numbers for network TV (ABC, NBC, CBS, FOX, and the CW. Why PBS is not included is beyond me) for the top 160 shows.
Here's my take on the top 30 shows, and why I don't watch much TV (and probably should never write for TV):
Here's my take on the top 30 shows, and why I don't watch much TV (and probably should never write for TV):
- American Idol -- I hate this show with a passion. I'd consider watching it if the contestants had to write all their own songs, and there wasn't a completely discriminatory age limit.
- American Idol Results -- Why is this separate?
- Dancing with the Stars 5 -- accidently saw a snippet -- this would be a great way to torture information out of me.
- Dancing with the Stars 6 -- same as above. Come to think of it, how does a show this simple have any audience?
- Dancing with the Stars 5 Results -- see above
- Desperate Housewives -- I gave this show one shot of my time, thinking there must be something amusing about it, but now instead of being indifferent to it, I now hate it's insipidness. Who on Earth does this appeal to?
- House -- I've seen a couple of episodes, primarily because of Hugh Laurie's awesomeness in Jeeves & Wooster and Blackadder. A decent show, but the only reason to watch is for Hugh Laurie.
- Dancing with the Stars 6 Results -- see 3, 4, and 5 above.
- CSI -- it's okay, but if you've seen one show, you have seen them all. There are always two bodies. No point in seeing more than one episode.
- Sunday Night Football -- I would rather have all the skin peeled from body by a baby rabbit than sit through an entire football game on TV.
- Grey's Anatomy -- saw one episode from the first season. It's okay I guess, but I never got hooked.
- Survivor 15: China -- this show is still on? Would never have know. I saw part of one season a couple of years ago, and lost interest partway through.
- The Moment of Truth -- what the hell is this? Never heard of it.
- NCIS -- saw one episode a couple of years ago -- isn't there a goth character in it?
- CSI: Miami -- two bodies an episode in Florida! See 9 above.
- Two and a Half Men -- I actually hate to admit it, but I watch this pretty regularly in reruns. I use it as background noise when I'm working.
- Survivor 16: Micronesia -- see 12 above
- Without a Trace -- think I might have caught one episode a few years back -- but I might be confusing it with Law and Order or CSI, or any one of the zillions of crime procedurals that clog up TV.
- Extreme Makeover: Home Edition -- was there ever any other edition? Saw an episode, interesting premise, but Ty Pennington is screechy and annoying. Would never watch this again unless I was sick on the couch and too tired or delusional to get up and change the channel (that's right, I don't own a remote control).
- Heroes -- this show is totally overhyped and underwhelming. I saw part of an episode but the writing was so bad I had to get up and do something else.
- Lost -- I do love this show. Great character-based writing, though the love triangles are annoying (I wanna know what the smoke beast is!!!)
- 60 Minutes -- I used to watch this regularly as a kid. I've more than fulfilled my lifetime quota of Andy Rooney viewing.
- Criminal Minds -- Never heard of it, though I am guess it is a police procedural.
- Hell's Kitchen -- I'm a fan of Top Chef, so I decided to give this one episode to see if I liked it -- couldn't make it all the way through because it was staggeringly awful. Chef Gordon Ramsey is okay, but where the hell did the producers of the show find contestants that bad?
- The Amazing Race 12 -- Saw season 4, liked it, but I couldn't imaging wasting time watching more than one season. It's a formulaic reality show. What's the draw?
- Samanth Who? -- Heard of it, but never got interested enough to give it a go.
- CSI: NY -- Jesus, another one. There should be a law banning spin-offs from running concurrently with the originating show.
- Deal or No Deal Monday -- saw like 5 minutes of it. I think I'm too smart to get the premise of the show, because I don't understand how there is a game in this purported gameshow.
- Law & Order: SVU -- yay, creepy police procedural. Could care less.
- The Unit -- huh? Never heard of it.

Wow! I only have watched two of the shows on your list. I guess my attention span is too short for the rest. I find myself Tivo-ing old sitcoms. I love the sitcom format.Don't ask me why. A half hour of light humor with out much substance is so relaxing to me. Reality bites!
I have to agree. Even though sitcoms are trite and formulaic, they run forever in reruns for a reason -- they are a good escape. I'd take the primary colored Brady Bunch over the repetitive crassness that is American Idol, any day.
I happen to think Hell's Kitchen is awesome! I think another show you would enjoy is House!
Wow, I think anonymous advice is awesome! Clearly, you have not seen "Top Chef". If you care about the culinary arts, and not just about people humiliating each other, that is a better show to watch than Hell's Kitchen.
As I said, I have seen an episode of of House. My reaction, "Meh". I only have so many hours in my life, I don't want to waste any of them watching medical dramas (even if they have really good actors).
On a side note, I've been watching "John Adams" on DVD. OMG is that good. I'm considering buying it. It's incredibly well done, packed with useful historical information, and completely riveting. It's hard to go back to junk food TV after something like that.
