    Stranded in Waikiki
    Friday, August 03, 2007

It really wasn't so bad, I am just exhausted though. Too many days without sleep!

Last night I went to the poetry slam, and my friend Malena, who promised to give me a ride home, ditched at the last minute. I decided to perform anyway. It was a blast as always! Paula Fuga performed as one of the main acts, and it was really incredible to hear her live. Personally, I think she has a better voice than Aretha Franklin, and I got the feeling that I was in a very special place at a very special time.

I was really nervous, since I had only finished writing the poem a few minutes before the show (pretty much how I got through high school with homework). It was great though, I got much bigger laughs than I had expected, and even though I had to read it, I did pretty well vocally (I hate listening to people read shit in a monotone voice). I scored pretty high, not enough to when, but I was competing against professionals, so not to bad.

After the show, the buses near my house already stopped running, so I walked into Waikiki. I had a back-up plan in case this ever happened. I went into the Wailana Coffee House, which is really quite nice with great all-American diner food (my favorite eat-out style), and has the virtue of being open 24hrs. I wished I had brought my laptop, but since I didn't have it with me, I surfed the internet briefly on my phone (which sucks), then just wrote for 4 hours.

At one point, a group of people who had seen me perform came up to me from another table and raved about it. they really loved it! That was a cool moment.
