    The Physics Family
    Friday, June 30, 2006

I've just posted my article for July 7th, which examines the relationships between the various branches of physics. I thought this would be a lightweight article, but I blew my word cap by 50%.

    Thunderbird
    Thursday, June 29, 2006

I just converted to Thunderbird from Netscape 6 for my mail client. The migration was completely seamless - I was quite impressed. My admiration for open software only continues to grow.

Also, it looks like I have a few more sessions of the Introduction to Database Design class coming up this fall. I originally thought I would be teaching this on a temporary basis, but this is pretty cool.

I've known about DA for awhile, but I didn't realize just how active a community it was. I joined (free, which is cool), posted a piece of artwork (called a deviation), and immediately got a comment. So it was pretty cool.

    My deviant site is here.

    Wormholes
    Thursday, June 22, 2006

I have a new article that will be posted next week - it is on wormholes. This emerged from a discussion I had with another writer on Suite101, an aboriginal rights activist in Australia who is questioning the "Western" view of time. He asserted that the linear view of time is a construct of western thought, and does not necessarily agree with reality. In general I tend to agree. I think the human brain is optimized for viewing time in certain ways, under certain circumstances. In our discussion he brought up wormholes, of which I admittedly knew less than I would like. It's kind of a fascinating topic and I went over my word limit again :-(

    Suite101 Makeover
    Saturday, June 17, 2006

I just checked the site I write my physics column for, and they've completed a makeover. I must say that it looks a lot better, and the site is much easier to use overall - though I'm not fond of the green, but at least it seems more cohesive now. Hopefully it will attract new readers!

    New Distraction
    Thursday, June 15, 2006

I found a new way to procrastinate from writing - I created a database-backed gallery page exactly the way I've been wanting to do it for several years, then I spent several hours sifting through my harddrive looking for stuff to post. The link is at left.
