    Hurricane Katrina
    Tuesday, August 30, 2005

This sort of thing is very upsetting, if you have any kind of heart it makes you speechless. I was in the area back in 1998, and stayed in Slidell Louisiana, which is a town on the banks on Lake Ponchratrain (sp?). It is also the town where my great-great-grandfather was born. Now it doesn't exist. I passed over the lake on I-10, which is a very long, very scary bridge, and now that doesn't exist.

When I moved to New York in 1997, the first thing I saw of the city were the tops of the World Trade Center. Now they don't exist.

We fool ourselves if we think that anything is invulnerable, impenetrable, immortal. Things change, the best we can do is adapt, move on, build on.

Hi. Just browsed in from the keyword interest "have spacesuit will travel" on my profile. I live in a little town north west of Slidell, LA that was hard hit by the hurricane also. Slidell is slowly recovering and the twin span (that long scary bridge) is back up and fully operational. It seems that the concrete roadway is meant to come off, so when the storm washed off those 10-15 sections the engineer corps just floated in a barge, fished out the sections and put them back on.
New Orleans is also recovering, albiet slowly. There are many sections of the city changed from when I was last there a year ago. I lost my house in the storm and we are living in a rent house until the economy cools off before rebuilding.
I found your blog interesting, Katherine and I'm adding it to my list of daily reads. I'm going to take a bit of space to pimp a friend's journal http://www.oldgreypoet.com because he's a damn fine writer and poet and I thought you might enjoy his work.

edward, thanks for the post! I'm sorry about your house - the whole thing has just been an awful tragedy. I'll check out that poet :-)
